Introduction
Those of you who have regularly
visited my website and read my blog will know that since my
son received the diagnosis of Asperger syndrome AS that I have
seriously considered that I also have this condition along
with my OCD. OCD is my primary condition. I use the word
primary in this instance to indicate that of the two
conditions OCD is of the most detriment. Nonetheless AS and
the symptoms thereof have impacted on my OCD and is of
itself a considerable disadvantage. This I explain in the
articles below along with my reasons for considering the
possibilty that I may have Aspergers syndrome.
Furthermore I consider that many
people with OCD may also have AS or other autism spectrum
disorders ASD such as for instance ADD or at least
considerable traits thereof enough to compound or adversely
effect the primary condtion, which in my case is OCD. I think
that there may even be a similar consideration concerning
other anxiety discovers and obsessive-compulsive like
conditions such as
anorexia nervosa but this seems less obvious although my
sister who suffered with agoraphobia, panic disorder and
anorexia nervosa manifested many traits of autism.
For the time being however I will focus on OCD.
In order to treat
any condition particualry neurological or psychological
disorders, in other words disorders of the mind and thinking processes, it is necessary
to identify all conditions which present. I think that
treating a condition such as OCD in isolation and ignoring
other disorders leads to a less favourable outcome and
prognosis. This I will discuss in another article which I am
in the process writing at the present time.
There are two accounts.
The first is an
extenuation of an account I wrote a year or so ago which
contains anecdotes, examples from my life that may serve to
confirm the possibility that I do indeed have AS. This is a
lengthy account and is, so to speak, a work in progress as
more and more will be added where appropriate as I discover
things in my life, my personality and behaviours which
either confirm or cast doubts on the validity of my
assumption. The more I read the experiences of others on
website site forums such as
Wrong Planet - Asperger and Autism
Community the more I consider that my notion is correct that I
do indeed have this condition along with OCD.
Note: I had some
considerable anxiety about publishing this longer version as
it is very repetitive and rambling. I am now simply so
exhausted by trying to edit it to make it more acceptable
and eliminate unnecessary repetition that I am now unable to do
so without causing both considerable delay in publishing and
an increase in my anxiety. Therefore I have decided to
publish it as it is notwithstanding these failings which I
may rectify when circumstances are more favourable.
Aspergers syndrome: A personal
consideration extended version
The second is much shorter and
was written for my psychologist. Being less detailed for the
most part without the anecdotes it is more generalised which
for someone so used to adding detail was very difficult
compile.
Aspergers syndrome: A personal
consideration .(Shorter version).
For a precise and detailed
account it is recommended that you read the longer version ,
particularly if you yourself are having similar
considerations. If you just wish to read for general
interest or you simply can’t cope with all my rambling and
waffling the second article is perhaps more suitable.
Why have I written these
accounts about my postulations concerning AS which some may
consider in itself is a obsessive compulsive
preoccupation?
I write this account as I do
anything else on my website and that is in order to shed
light on the condition of OCD and other anxiety disorders
and the effect that such conditions have on ones life. And
in the case of these accounts the possible effects of co
morbid or coexisting conditions. In this case AS or other
ASD. In due course I intend to write my ideas as to why I
think there is a connection between ASDs and OCD and why it
is important for the recognition of this and other co
existing conditions on the prognosis and treatment of OCD,
and indeed other anxiety disorders,
and As
I would like to hear
comments please from anyone but I would in particular like
comments from people with Asperger Syndrome, professionals
in the field of diagnostic evaluation or anyone who has an
interest who can give an informed opinion concerning the
validity or otherwise of my consideration that I may have
Asperger syndrome or other ASD. Also I would be most
grateful for comments by anyone in a similar position with
OCD who is also considering the possibilty of a duel
diagnosis of AS or who has a diagnosis of both OCD and AS.
Comments concerning my
inference that OCD and autism are related are also welcome,
do you agree, disagree or considering a similar idea.
